Statement from Musicamp Committee May 2006

It has become extremely difficult to plan ahead in Zimbabwe these days. That applies as much to the organisation of Musicamp as it does to anything else. The association is very keen that there should be a camp this year but this largely depends on support.
Sadly, the number of experienced instrumentalists in Zimbabwe continues to decline and the costs of organising Musicamp continues to rise. It would help the organisers greatly to have an idea well in advance of how many people are likely to want to be at the camp and what instruments they will want to play.
It is proposed to hold the camp at a private boarding school near Marondera from Saturday 19 August 2006 to Saturday 26 August, with a final concert in the evening of Saturday 26 August in Harare. At this stage it is impossible to make commitments as to the likely cost, given the rampant inflation with which we all have to struggle, but Musicampers can rest assured that every effort will be made to contain costs as much as possible. Once you have registered your interest in coming to Musicamp and have provided us with your contact details, we will be able to provide you with regular up-dates on the likely costs, as well as on the organisation of Musicamp itself.
Please could you therefore let us know if you are interested in attending Musicamp 2006 and assist us by completing and returning the relevant
2006 Application Form to us as soon as possible.
Please could you also forward this information to anyone else who you think may be interested.
Musicamp has traditionally been geared towards instrumentalists who have attained the minimum level of Grade 3. In other words, people who have learned to read music and who have a reasonable level of competence on at least one instrument. Acceptance on the camp is therefore not automatic.
      Please complete and return the
2006 Application Form either by posting to National Musicamp Association, P O Box CH 804, Chisipite, Harare, or by emailing the information requested to Musicampzim@yahoo.com Please reply before the middle of May if you can.

WHAT IS MUSICAMP?

The National Musicamp Association is run by a small committee who give their services voluntarily to plan and manage the annual camp, as well as raise funds throughout the remainder of the year to hold this important musical event - which attracts musicians from neighbouring countries.

MUSICAMP is open to instrumentalists of all ages, and it is a chance to enrich your musical life in an educational, enthusiastic and enjoyable environment.

History:
Musicamp has been run annually, in Zimbabwe, for nearly 40 years and provides a unique opportunity for instrumentalists of all ages and backgrounds to get together and make music. It has therefore done an immeasurable amount to keep classical western music alive and fun for players in this country. A publication is in preparation about the history of Musicamp by John Hodgson ...watch this space for details !

Who is Musicamp aimed at?
Musicamp is primarily for instrumentalists who can read music relatively well. Since nearly all our activities require a reasonable level of sight-reading music skills, a minimum of Grade 3 level is recommended. Instrumentalists who have attained the level of Grade 6 and above will usually be included in the First Orchestra. Those who have not attained that level, or who play an instrument which cannot be used in a symphony orchestra, will usually play in the Second Orchestra. Pianists and singers with good sight-reading skills are often used in the percussion section of these orchestras.

Younger siblings and children of Musicampers who have not attained a minimum level of Grade 3 can be accommodated upon special request.

GUEST CONDUCTORS
MUSICAMP invites a different Guest Conductor each year. Previous Conductors have included :: Walter Klauss, Corrado Trinci, Tony Shorrocks, Spencer Pitfield, Graham Lea-Cox, Leslie Howard, Andrew Sherwood, Leslie Howard & David Campbell
