Over the Edge Explore Male Dominance in “Taming of The Shrew”

Over the Edge’s latest production, “Taming of the Shrew”, running at the
Alliance Francaise from 22nd to the 24th of February, is a tragi-comic
exploration of male dominance over women. Set in a dream world of
hyper-modern Zimbabwe, the show revolves around the marrying off of two
daughters, Bianca and Katharina. Their father, Baptista, trades their
favours off to the various suitors whose only concern in marrying them is
the amount of dowry that they will receive. Bianca is quite willing to buy
into this system of marriage and manipulates her father to get the man she
wants. Katharina, on the other hand, is strongly opposed to being treated as
an object, in essence a modern woman with a will and intelligence of her
own. As such the males regard her as a dangerous shrew and set out to ‘tame’
her.
The show is a dark comedy that draws out the cruelty of a system that
remains in Zimbabwe glaringly unresolved. They have used puppets for the
older characters, being manipulated by the younger ones, and, making full
use of the talents of costume designer Heeten Bhagat, the younger characters
are revealed as dangerous and absurd males demanding their dominance over
the two females.
There is much laughter in the piece, based on the absurdity of the
characters and the farce of the situations that they find themselves in.
Over the Edge have drawn out the comedy and use it well to counterpoint the
danger of the situation that the females, particularly Katharina, find
themselves in.
Wiina Msamati is the director of the piece as well playing Tranio, the
devoted servant. His master, Lucentio, played by Craig Peter, is the
ultimate victor in the tug of war love battle for Bianca. In that contest
his main rival is Hortensio, a Romeo in the most absurd tradition, played by
Gavin Peter. Zane E. Lucas takes the role of the headstrong Katharina and
Adam Neill playing the dangerous Petruchio, who will eventually tame this
shrew, counter points this pivotal character. Special guest Michael Pearce
joins Over the Edge in this production, taking the roles of both the
manipulative Bianca and the father of the daughters, Baptista.

Over the Edge will be performing two evening shows of “Taming of the Shrew”
on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd and two matinees on that Saturday and
Sunday 24th Feb 2002. Booking for this latest exceptional piece of entertainment can
be made through the Over the Edge booking line on 091 302 913

REPTEENS directed by MARK TURNBULL
27th Feb to 2nd March on Reps Main stage
A wacky comedy adaption by MARTIN RILEY, .

PRESS RELEASE – CANTERBURY TALES

REPTEENS will be opening the new season for 2002 at REPS Theatre on 27th
February with a wacky, hysterical new comedy version of the classic
Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer.

REPTEENS is the youth theatre at REPS which meets on Fridays evenings and
has grown substantially in numbers over the last year. The play has 32
young actors and actresses who are the future of Zimbabwean theatre and are
all excited at showing their skills at entertaining the theatre-going public
in Harare.

Not only are all the performers aged between 13 and 19 years of age, but all
the technical and stage-management crew are young people of the same ilk.
There are also three assistant directors learning their skills on the
production and helping Mark Turnbull to put the young cast through their
paces.

The play is a new adaption by the English playwright Martin Riley, specially
made accessible to a young audience by using ‘commedia dell arte’ and street
theatre styles to put across the stories told by a group of pilgrims on
their way to Canturbury Cathredal. The plays are bold and brash using
audience participation and gives lots of young, talented performers the
opportunity to entertain and introduce the audience to a different way of
telling a funny and exciting theatrical story.

Tickets are available from the Spotlight from Monday 18th Feb, with tickets
at $200 for students and young people and $300 for adults. The show runs
from 27Feb – 2 March at 7pm with a special matinee performance on Sat 2nd
March at 2.30 pm.

Booking opens at The Spotlight (tel 308159) on Monday 19 November.
Booking hours are Monday to Friday 10.00am to 2.00pm and Saturdays
9.00am to 12 noon.
