Congo Fever @ The Mannenberg (12 March)
The dancefloor is open at The Mannenberg on Friday, 12 March, when
the popular Fife Avenue venue opens its doors for its first-ever
west-African dance-off, 'Congo Fever!' welcoming French DJ Ben
Montrésor, hot off Jozi turntables.
DJ Ben Montrésor is a French "young Old School" DJ who worked for
several years in worldwide acclaimed Paris-based radio station Radio
Nova. He landed in South Africa a few years ago with almost 100 kg of
vinyl records in his bags... and since then, the volume has doubled!
Drum, Jazz, Blues, Afro Traditional, Funk, Soul, Afro Grooves, Reggae,
Hip Hop, House, Jungle, Techno... Ben Montrésor can rock every style.
DJ Ben's Harare gigs will be mixing blazing classic rumbas with the
freshest kwassa kwassa tunes from the Congolese capital, adding spices
from West Africa and a couple of Afrobeat chillies - a special
memorable dish to be savoured on the dancefloor! A special menu will
also be cooking up in The Mannenberg restaurant, under the close
supervision of new venue managers Grace Rukure and Themba Sigauke,
bringing new life, fresh ideas and a tasty selection of African dishes
to the programme.
Ben Montrésor is brought to Harare by a collaboration between
Alliance Francaise and Pamberi Trust, a creative partnership between
two cultural organisations which has already hosted diverse musicians
of the world since the arrival of Alliance Francaise director Charles
Houdart in 2009 - Salque & Periani (France) in October and Chico
Antonio (Mozambique) in December 2009.
The Mannenberg will be rearranged for space to welcome those who love to dance, who are called by the rhythm, who have to dance! Come out and get down!
'Congo Fever' with DJ Ben Montrésor (France), The Mannenberg, Friday, 12 March, 9.30pm

"is a great comic as well as a great singer of this repertory: I still
think his neck-breakingly fast second-act Rondo delivered note- and
word-perfect while being flung about by eight dancers a feat of
astounding virtuosity…. Baron Boum and his co-conspirators are a
wonderfully grotesque bunch and Marc Minowski [conductor] commands the
elegance and musical wit to do full justice to the composer …
Definitely one of my Desert Island DVDs affording endless pleasure,
endless love of the composer!"

Exhibitions @ National Gallery, Harare (March)
Point of Contact (to 31 March)
The North Gallery is graced by 19th century European paintings,
print works and sculptures. The period from 1801 to 1900 witnessed a
series of historic events including the French revolution, developments
in the fields of mathematics, physics, metallurgy, sport and
abolishment of slavery in several countries. The 19th century also
witnessed the African colonization where European countries scrambled
for and acquired African countries. It is noteworthy to also mention
that due to colonization the present European works were brought to
Africa to illustrate another side of life that we do not know or we can
not see. Several works in the show reveal the thinking and prevalent
activities that occurred during the century and several African works
from the collection speak to the point of contact, the linking of the
two continents in both negative and positive ways.
Black History Month (to 31 March)
Black History Month is a remembrance of important people and events
in the history of the African diaspora. A selection of pictures have
put on display to reflect on the representation of the history of
Africans in the development of present structures and systems.
Tribute to Colleen Madamombe (to 29 March)
The late Colleen Madamombe celebrated the fuller African physique
and her distinguishing style was a refreshing approach away from the
more traditional mystical works produced by the first generation of
Shona sculptors. Throughout Colleen's works she tried to communicate
the injustice that affected the lives of women and their status. She
represents the voice of a new generation of Zimbabwean women. Madamombe
worked predominantly in hard black Springstone, often using the outer
blanket of the stone and creating many different textures to contrast
with the polished surfaces. The National Gallery of Zimbabwe takes this
opportunity to honour one of the greatest female artists the country
has produced.
Celebrating Women in Photos (to 31 March)
On show will be photographs by female photographers. The show seeks
to represent the interests and visions of the best of Zimbabwean
photography.
Art Exhibition: Gail Burnett @ the Academy, Bulawayo (15–27 March)

and Gail Burnett's work will be on display in Room 25 for the two weeks

Synopsis
A family marriage consultative meeting fails to take off, erupting into
a heated debate on the constitution away from the marriage issues as
the gathered family members wait for Constance, the one whose marriage
is being discussed, to arrive. It turns out that they are not only
waiting for Constance but waiting for the new Constitution because
Constance is attending a constitution making meeting. The family is
sharply divided by their different beliefs, affiliations, ambitions,
interests and questions pertaining what a new constitution is and what
it should address or include in terms of democracy and good governance.
This heated debate leads to the acting father of the family, an
ex-combatant who considers the many questions as anti- government
propaganda promoted by foreign NGOs and foreign unfriendly media
institutions and governments, storming out of the family meeting
throwing the marriage discussion into disarray.

CLUBS & SOCIETIES
Association of Complementary Health Practitioners (9 March)
Our meeting for March will be held on Tuesday the 9th at 6.30 pm for 7 pm, at Highlands Sports Club, off Glenara Ave, in Harare.
Our speaker will be Mr Willie Badenhorst, whose theme is Health and
Wellness. He will tell us about his on-going work with Aloe Vera, and
its very many beneficial uses. He will discuss the plant and its
benefits for everyone, as well as the medicinal uses through the ages
and to the present day. Willie will also give us an outline of recent
research findings and explain that AVA has its own database. He would
like to come again later in the year and talk about Worms and
Vermiculture and their medicinal importance, and will briefly mention
this aspect of his work. There will be time for questions and answers.
This should be a most interesting talk and well worth attending.
We have a Bring and Share supper after the talk, to which everyone
is invited, but we do ask that everyone please bring a plate of
something to add to the meal. The bar will be open for drinks. There is
a small charge at the door to cover the cost of the hire of the hall
and for the help of the kitchen staff. For any inquiries, please phone
Lorna Robinson on 744410.
BirdLife Zimbabwe (BLZ) Mashonaland (14, 18, 20, 21 March)
We have a bird walk almost every weekend and a monthly Evening
Meeting on the 3rd Thursday of each month 5:30 for 6:00 p.m. The venue
is the Avondale Sports Club on Brighton Road between 2nd Street
Extension and Upper East Road. There is a bar and eats. There is a
security guard to look after the vehicles.
Members and non-members are welcome to attend any of the events.
Unless there is a gate charge by the responsible authorities at some
venues (e.g. Haka), there are no other charges associated with a
birding outing or evening presentation however at some venues a tip
would be appreciated if there is a guard looking after the vehicles. At
each outing, there is a leader who will identify the birds being seen
for the benefit of the group. There is nothing to stop experienced
birders from "doing their own thing" at any of the venues as long as
they assemble afterwards at the designated meeting point to participate
in the bird count. At most venues, for the bird count, participants
will usually have their own chair, refreshments and eats - a social
atmosphere prevails!

Congo Fever @ The Mannenberg
(12 March)
The dancefloor is open at The Mannenberg on Friday, 12
March, when
the popular Fife Avenue venue opens its doors for its first-ever
west-African dance-off, 'Congo Fever!' welcoming French DJ Ben
Montrésor, hot off Jozi turntables.
DJ Ben Montrésor is a French "young Old
School" DJ who worked for
several years in worldwide acclaimed Paris-based radio station Radio
Nova. He landed in South Africa a few years ago with almost 100 kg of
vinyl records in his bags... and since then, the volume has
doubled!
Drum, Jazz, Blues, Afro Traditional, Funk, Soul, Afro Grooves, Reggae,
Hip Hop, House, Jungle, Techno... Ben Montrésor can rock every style.
DJ Ben's Harare gigs will be mixing
blazing classic rumbas with the
freshest kwassa kwassa tunes from the Congolese capital, adding spices
from West Africa and a couple of Afrobeat chillies - a
special
memorable dish to be savoured on the dancefloor! A special menu will
also be cooking up in The Mannenberg restaurant, under the close
supervision of new venue managers Grace Rukure and Themba Sigauke,
bringing new life, fresh ideas and a tasty selection of African dishes
to the programme.
Ben Montrésor is brought to Harare by a
collaboration between
Alliance Francaise and Pamberi Trust, a creative partnership between
two cultural organisations which has already hosted diverse musicians
of the world since the arrival of Alliance Francaise director Charles
Houdart in 2009 - Salque & Periani (France) in October and
Chico
Antonio (Mozambique) in December 2009.
The Mannenberg will be rearranged for space to welcome those who love
to dance, who are called by the rhythm, who have to
dance! Come out and get down!

think his neck-breakingly fast second-act Rondo delivered note- and
word-perfect while being flung about by eight dancers a feat of
astounding virtuosity….

Exhibitions @ National Gallery,
Harare (March)
Point of Contact (to 31 March)
The North Gallery is graced by 19th century European
paintings,
print works and sculptures.
Black History Month is a remembrance of important
people and events
in the history of the African diaspora. A selection of pictures have
put on display to reflect on the representation of the history of
Africans in the development of present structures and systems.
Tribute to Colleen Madamombe (to 29 March)
The late Colleen Madamombe celebrated the fuller
African physique
and her distinguishing style was a refreshing approach away from the
more traditional mystical works produced by the first generation of
Shona sculptors.

Association of Complementary Health
Practitioners (9 March)
Our meeting for March will be held on Tuesday the 9th
at 6.30 pm for 7 pm, at Highlands Sports Club, off Glenara Ave, in
Harare.
Our speaker will be Mr Willie Badenhorst,
whose theme is Health and
We have a Bring and Share supper after
the talk, to which everyone
is invited, but we do ask that everyone please bring a plate of
something to add to the meal. The bar will be open for drinks. There is
a small charge at the door to cover the cost of the hire of the hall
and for the help of the kitchen staff. For any inquiries, please phone
Lorna Robinson on 744410.
BirdLife Zimbabwe (BLZ) Mashonaland
(14, 18, 20, 21 March)
We have a bird walk almost every weekend and a monthly
Evening
Meeting on the 3rd Thursday of each month 5:30 for 6:00 p.m. The venue
is the Avondale Sports Club on Brighton Road between 2nd Street
Extension and Upper East Road. There is a bar and eats. There
is a
security guard to look after the vehicles.
