With a brand new line-up, style & venue, the Funkalicious crew will once again push the envelope to create and produce the best party in town. Funkalicious will be the official after party for the inaugural Zimbabwe Fashion week taking place at the National Gallery. Funkalicious will take over the Hellenic Sports Club and create a scene that's hip, stylish & fun.
The International Guest DJ will be DJ Toby 2 Shoes. Toby 2 Shoes is a Cape Town based DJ who is the pioneer of alternative clubbing music in general in South Africa. He has become the ambassador for the club thumping mix of Balkan big beat from Eastern Europe along with Afrobeat, ragga, electro and much more from his mad mix bag. Balkanology is an addictive, irresistible dance delight. It's a completely unique, fresh genre and it's probably going to be the catchiest music you've heard.
The live band performance will be presented by The Unsound: a collaborative effort by some of Zimbabwe's most innovative new performers: Rina Mushonga, Asa Jogi and Angus Wakeling. The trio has combined to create a fusion of sound that blends the best of contemporary folk, dance and classical music. They performed two sold out shows at HIFA earlier this year to much critical acclaim and are definitely a breath of fresh air to the Zimbabwe musical landscape.
To round up the evening or rather the early hours of the morning, the resident local DJ will be DJ Marv Studd arguably the best party DJ in Zimbabwe. Marv Studd is known for his tribal house, funk and dance collection that dares to mix international beats with local vibes. Full of energy, DJ Marv Studd will have you in a musical trance for hours!

Thursday 22 July at 1.10 p.m. in Room 25, Zimbabwe Academy of Music

Beethoven: Fidelio (30 July)
Friday 30 July at 6.30 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall [with supper interval]
Beethoven's only opera will be shown in a production  from the Glyndebourne Festival which received a four-star top recommendation from the Penguin Guide: "It is good to have as consummate an actress as Elisabeth Söderström as Leonore in this vintage Glyndebourne account of Fidelio, recorded in 1979.  Bernard Haitink conducts a powerful performance with Kurt Appelgren a superb Rocco, Elizabeth Gale a sweet Marzelline and Anton de Ridder an unstrained Florestan... John Bury's sets for Peter Hall's production vividly capture the atmosphere of the Napoleonic period. A clear first choice on DVD."
Admission: $3.00 / R25.00  [free to Red Carpet members and subscribers]

The Bulawayo Chamber Music Society (31 July)
Saturday 31 July at 6.00 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall

Handel: ‘Lascia ch’io pianga’ from ‘Rinaldo’ (arranged for bassoon and piano trio)
Haydn: Piano Trio in C major
The performers will be Donald Welsh (violin), Cynthia Pretorius (cello), Rose Green (bassoon) and Deon Marcus (viola / recorder / piano). There will be no interval and, as usual at these concerts, cheese and wine will be available afterwards.
This is an Academy concert and tickets are $5.00 (no advance booking), free to Red Carpet members only.

Film: Gosford Park (5 August)
Thursday 5 August at 7.00 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall
Gosford Park, directed by Robert Altman, features an all-star cast including Eileen Atkins, Helen Mirren, Kristin Scott Thomas, Maggie Smith, Alan Bates, Stephen Fry, Michael Gambon and Derek Jacobi. It was voted Best British Film of the Year and was described by the Daily Mail as "an instant classic", the Mirror as "a triumph" and the Telegraph as "brilliant".
"It is November 1932. Gosford Park is the magnificent country estate to which Sir William McCordle and his wife, Lady Sylvia, gather relations and friends for a weekend shooting party. As the guests assemble in the gilded drawing rooms above, their personal maids and valets swell the ranks of the house servants in the teeming kitchen and corridors below-stairs. But all is not as it seems: neither amongst the bejewelled guests lunching and dining at their enormous leisure, nor in the attic bedrooms and stark work places where the servants labour for the comfort of their employers. Part comedy of manners, part mystery, the film is finally a moving portrait of events that bridge generations, class, sex, tragic personal history – and culminate in a murder. Or is it two murders?…"
Admission: $3.00 / R25.00 [free to Red Carpet members only]

Gounod: Roméo et Juliette  (6 August)
Friday 6 August at 6.30 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall  [with supper interval]  Carriages: 10.30 p.m.
Sir Charles Mackerras, who died on 14 July, "teases the romantic beauty from Gounod's score, which has been much admired since its first performance in 1867. In this recording the youthful Roberto Alagna as Romeo and Leontina Vaduva as Juliet lead an excellent cast in a touching portrayal of Shakespeare's story of impossible love."
Sadly this DVD will serve as a tribute to Sir Charles Mackerras who died last Wednesday at the age of 84.
Admission: $3.00 / R25.00  [free to Red Carpet members and subscribers]

PLEASE COME TO THE CONVIVIALS FOR WEEKEND CAMPING TRIPS IF YOU WISH TO COME ALONG!

BirdLife Zimbabwe (BLZ) Mashonaland (1, 8 August)
We have a bird walk almost every weekend – the walk itself lasts 2–3 hours and thereafter the combined bird list is called while refreshments are being enjoyed. We also have a monthly evening presentation on the 3rd Thursday of each month, 5:30 for 6:00 p.m. The venue is the Avondale Sports Club on Brighton Road, between 2nd Street Extension and Upper East Road. There is a bar and eats. There is a security guard to look after the vehicles.
Members and non-members are welcome to attend any of the events.
Unless there is a gate charge by the responsible authorities at some venues (e.g. Haka), there are no other charges associated with a birding outing or evening presentation however at some venues a tip would be appreciated if there is a guard looking after the vehicles. At each outing, there is a leader who will  identify the birds being seen for the benefit of the group. There is nothing to stop experienced birders from "doing their own thing" at any of the venues as long as they assemble afterwards at the designated meeting point to participate in the bird count. At most venues, for the bird count, participants will usually have their own chair, refreshments and eats - a social atmosphere prevails!

Association of Complementary Health Practitioners (10 August)
We will be holding our monthly talk and supper in August, even though Tuesday the 10th is a public holiday, but the club will be open.
Our meeting will take place as usual at Highlands Sports Club, on Tuesday, 10 August, at 6.30 pm for 7 pm.
We will be welcoming Mrs Terry Parham as our speaker, and her subject is Flower Essences and their special properties. Flower Essences were originally discovered by Dr Edward Bach. Although gentle, they carry high vibrations which work holistically on our physical, mental and spiritual planes, and can uplift, calm and centre us, and also help to heal deep seated problems. They can be used in many ways, mixed into creams or taken internally, put into baths or in room sprays or even rubbed onto pulse points. It is not the oil that is important, but the vibration that is preserved.
Terry qualified as a Bach Flower Practitioner in 2002 through the British Institute of Homeopathy. She has made up these essences herself using local Zimbabwe flowers mainly from the Nyanga area. These remedies can boost emotions such as courage, self-acceptance, healing during convalescence, peace, support, wisdom and others. Terry is a therapist with several other qualifications, and is a lovely person to listen to and from whom to learn. Bach Remedies make one a better person. Come and find out how.
All are welcome, and following the talk we have a Bring and Share supper, so everyone who attends is asked to bring a contribution towards the meal, e.g. soup, or salad or  a quiche or a pudding. The bar will be open, and the small entry charge goes towards paying for the hire of the hall and the help of the kitchen staff.
