Six of the Best (13–17 March)
The Barnyard Theatre Productions presents a tribute to surpass all tributes, as we celebrate the  music of the six greatest pop icons of all time. Imagine a concert  featuring Freddie Mercury, Bon Jovi, Meat Loaf, Billy Joel, Pink and Cher all on one stage in one show, singing number one  hits from the last four decades of pop music.  These artists have  dominated the charts to such a degree and made such an impact on the music  industry that it is essential to stage a special tribute!
The show features a repertoire that was made in Rock and Roll Heaven. Just imagine Meat Loaf challenging the vocal  ability of Freddie who in turn has to compete with Bon Jovi! Then we have  the power and beauty of Pink, and the soulfulness of Billy, and of course  let's not forget the flamboyance and decadence of Cher!
Six of the Best is about showmanship and  charisma and the music all comes together in one big concert that will  simply blow your mind!  So get ready to experience the hottest rock  and pop stars on the planet in one of the greatest Barnyard shows that  makes them simply – Six of the  Best!
The show has not yet been seen in Johannesburg so is a real first for Harare. The cast then returns to Johannesburg  to launch the Barnyard Theatre's brand new theatre at  Rivonia.
Early  bird bookings (so you can get that favourite table) can be made by emailing <mailto:boxoffice@dae.co.zw>.

Performing Arts Bulawayo [PAB] and the Academy [Bulawayo]

Frozen Planet & Downton Abbey: Series 2 (1, 8 & 15 March)
Thursdays 23 February and 1, 8 & 15 March in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
These two outstanding series continue in March.  "Frozen Planet" begins at 7.00 and "Downton Abbey " at 8.15 after a short interval.
Supper is available from 6.00 p.m. but must be booked in advance on 60684 / 67195
Admission: $3.00 [free to film members]

Orff: Carmina Burana & Mahler: Symphony No.8 (2 March)
Friday 2 March in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.
"Carmina Burana", by turns boisterous and lyrical, sets poems written by medieval monks celebrating life’s pleasures, especially springtime, food and drink, and love both ribald and tender.  The performance features Kathleen Battle and Sir Thomas Allen with an outstanding Japanese choir and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Seiji Ozawa.  After the interval comes Mahler’s Eighth Symphony in which Riccardo Chailly conducts massed forces (over 500 performers) at a concert which formed part of Leipzig’s centenary International Mahler Festival.
Supper is available during the interval but must be booked in advance on 60684 / 67195
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

Donizetti: Don Pasquale (9 March)
Friday 9 March Donizetti: Don Pasquale, Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.
Don Pasquale was among the last of Donizetti's 66 operas and has been described as "the ripest" of his comic operas.  The plot centres on an elderly bachelor who has decided to marry in order to spite his nephew Ernesto but Norina, the wife chosen for him, happens to be the woman Ernesto loves...
In this production from La Scala, Milan, "Riccardo Muti consistently captures the fun of the piece whilst not neglecting the vein of melancholy that also runs through it.  Ferrucio Furlanetto makes an outstanding Don Pasquale", Nuccia Focile, in her La Scala debut, was described as "a delightful Norina with a fresh and agile voice" and Gregory Kunde brought "a Mozartian elegance" to Ernesto's music.
Supper available during the interval
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

Libor Novacek (piano) (13 March)
Tuesday, 13 March Libor Novacek (piano) Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
Libor Novacek should need little introduction as this will be his fourth visit in recent years. He has performed in North, South and Central America, India, South Africa, Spain, France and Germany as well as extensively in his homeland, the Czech Republic, and in England. His recordings have been very well received and performances of Brahms and Liszt in particular hailed as rivalling the very best already available – and both composers feature in Libor's programme:
  • Beethoven: Sonata No.3 in C major, Op.2,  No.3
  • Brahms: Seven Fantasies,  Op.116
  • Janáãek: On an Overgrown Path – Book  2
  • Liszt: Sonata in B  minor
Youth blended with maturity: a mature artist in full control of his instrument and music  [Joseph McLellan, The Washington Post]
A major musician at the start of what promises to be a terrific career…. there seems something very special about this artist
    [James Inverne, Gramophone].
Booking opens on Tuesday 28 February at the Academy
Admission: $10.00 / $5.00 [free to Red Carpet members and subscribers]

The festival will include a performance of Carmina Burana and the first performance of a major commission from Richard Sisson, The Song of the Carnivores.  In addition to the usual concerts, there will be a daily series of concerts of different types of music and dance (pop, jazz, gospel, ethnic, etc.) featuring local performers and involving the visitors in some "crossover".
The more traditional repertoire will include concerts of music by Schubert concert (Fantasy in C for violin and piano, Variations on Trockne Blumen for flute and piano, Wanderer Fantasy and Death and the Maiden Quartet) and Mendelssohn (Cello Sonata No.2, Piano Trio No.2 and Octet) and a closing concertos concert (C.P.E.Bach: Flute Concerto in D minor, Mozart: Piano Concerto No.12 in A major, K414, Haydn: Cello Concerto in C major and Saint-Saëns: The Carnival of the Animals), several piano quintets (Dohnanyi: No.1, Fibich, Schumann and Shostakovich  - and a good deal more!

HERBARIUM FUMIGATION APPEAL
In September 2009 the Zimbabwe Tree Society launched an appeal for funds to enable Zimbabwe's National Herbarium to be fumigated. The response was highly gratifying and the funds raised enabled us to carry out 4 fumigations at approximately 6 monthly intervals. The cost of a single fumigation is US$ 350.
In the intervening period, the financial position of the Herbarium has remained weak and it appears that further support for continuing fumigation will be necessary. I am therefore re-opening the request for funds and would ask everyone to consider making a donation towards this important appeal, the purpose of which is to prevent the important plant collections deteriorating through insect damage.
This appeal is not in any way limited to Tree Society members and I would ask you to spread the word to your friends and any potential donors.
Donations can be made in cash to the Tree Society Treasurer, Bill Clarke (0772-252720), to Terry Fallon (04 481076), or to Isla Grundy (04 745263; 0772-233751).
